A rota changes, a shift crosses midnight and an unpaid break complicates the hours. Weeks later you try to check a payslip using half-remembered times from old messages. Shift Buddy gives each shift a date, time and rate while the details are fresh.

The difficult part is often not the task itself. It is having the right facts when the task returns. A short record that you can find next time beats trying to reconstruct a conversation, a receipt or a date from memory. That is the role this focused tool aims to fill.

It is worth using only if the problem turns up often enough in your life. You do not need to use every app in a catalogue just because it is available. Choose the one that removes a repeated interruption, and judge it on whether you actually come back to it.

What you can do inside the app

The calculation accounts for overnight shifts and subtracts unpaid breaks from your estimated hours. The workspace is designed around daily / weekly use, with an interface that keeps the main information visible rather than hiding it inside a complex setup process.

You can make a record by entering information such as employer / workplace, shift date, starts, ends, unpaid break (minutes), pay per hour (£). You can then return to edit it, search your records and remove entries you no longer want. The screen calculates or highlights the relevant result using the data you have provided.

• Start with something real. Add one item you need to manage now. You do not have to copy years of old records before the app is useful.
• Review the important information. Look at the dates, amounts or status the app displays. If a number does not look right, check what you entered rather than assuming the calculation knows more than you do.
• Keep the record up to date. Return when the task changes, becomes due or is completed. The value of a manual tool depends on how reliably you update it.

This is not intended to be another dashboard you must maintain for the sake of appearances. The whole point is to give a familiar job somewhere simple to live, where you can get an answer and move on.

Who is it for — and when is it the wrong tool?

What Shift Buddy does not do

Gross estimates do not include tax, National Insurance, pensions, holiday pay or contractual overtime rates. The app is not an official employer rota or payroll product.

How to start in three small steps

1. Open the app. Choose a current household or personal task that you would otherwise track somewhere else.

3. Review, act and return. Use the result to decide what happens next. Update the entry when something changes, then see whether returning next week feels easier than starting again.

The new tool can export and import records as JSON backups. Records may remain in your browser unless your signed-in account confirms successful private cloud saving. The live interface tells you when it is using browser-only storage.

Practical questions before you decide

Will it tell me my exact take-home wages?

No. It works from hours and hourly rates you enter. Your employer's payroll and official payslip determine the actual payment.

Can I use it on my phone?

It is a browser-based tool designed for modern phone and desktop screens. The page is responsive, but thorough cross-browser and cross-device testing is still in progress. Check that the workflow suits the device you use most.

Will my entries appear in Chrome and the ChatGPT browser?

Not automatically. Those browsers can keep separate local storage, even when used on the same phone. The eighteen new mini-apps support private cloud saving for eligible signed-in accounts, but a save must succeed before another device can load it. Export a backup before clearing browser data or switching environments.
